Compass Guides: Subject Matter Experts On-Demand

At Compass Group we have a unique approach to supporting our portfolio. Instead of relying heavily on a traditional operating partner model, we’ve rolled out our Compass Guides program to bring senior-level functional expertise in the areas of Human Resources, General Counsel, Digital Transformation, and Marketing.

The concept of Compass Guides originated several years ago from feedback shared during an annual executive meeting led by Compass Group’s Managing Partner, John Huhn. Many portfolio companies highlighted the need for specialized support, especially in the area of Human Resources, to strengthen their operations. As a result, Jaynanne Calaway-Habeck was brought on as the first Compass Guide, offering decades of Human Resources experience, both in-house and in consulting roles.

Over time, additional Guides have been added to the team based on the needs of the portfolio companies. “It’s an ongoing conversation,” said John. “We're constantly seeking our partners' input on how we can best support them.”

Mike Higgins, CEO at EPIC Systems, stated, “Tactically, through their Compass Guide model, they bring expertise in HR, legal, technology, and marketing that we as a small business could not afford on our own.”

The impact of the Compass Guides program in 2023 has been nothing short of remarkable: Guides received more than 250 project requests, and successfully completed more than 180 projects, spanning from refining day-to-day operational strategies within departments to transformative initiatives that help to open up new revenue streams.

Beyond the numbers lies the true testament of success—the stories of partnerships strengthened and challenges conquered. Each completed project shows Compass Group’s commitment to the growth and success of our portfolio companies.

“The invaluable support brought by the Compass Guide team cannot be overstated,” said Corey Creekmore, Digital Marketing Manager at Florida Energy Water & Air, who works with Compass Guide Brad Fitzgerald on the company’s marketing strategy. “We’re grateful for all the Guides’ willingness to jump in and help us grow.”
